"It is with great pride that I nominate Professor Abner Romero Rosario, from the Illustration and Animation Workshop at Central High School of Visual Arts (CAV) of San Juan, Puerto Rico, for the "Educator of Distinction" award. Romero Rosario offers unique instruction throughout Puerto Rico's public education system. His chair is so robust that the students of his workshop are accepted into the best art universities in the United States with merit scholarships, portfolios, and even full-tuition scholarships. As part of his style of work -type PBL- he makes frequent exhibitions so that students learn all the processes of making an exhibition, from carrying out the promotion and curation to serving as guides to the external public. It also invites professional artists and industry people to see students' work and offer advice for their portfolios. The Covid-19 pandemic did not prevent him from continuing these efforts remotely, as he coordinated talks via ZOOM and Microsoft Team so that students could listen to the experiences of renowned animators who are active in the industry such as Axel Álvarez, Guillermo Martínez, among others, getting their students inspired and working harder to achieve their dreams. Certainly, all these experiences are formative and very significant for these young people, who are positively influenced to seek excellence in their school and professional life. As the saying goes, "The fruit doesn't fall far from the tree," and this teacher's legacy is in his hundreds of students, who work in the entertainment industry at animation studios, film studios, television stations, advertising agencies, community-based or cultural organizations, and also as teachers or professors in university institutions. He is an exemplary teacher who is completely dedicated to his students and his teaching goes beyond the classroom, since he maintains constant communication with his students, in such a way that he keeps them producing artistically throughout the year, including Christmas and summer holidays. "Abner" as his students affectionately call him, supports and encourages his pupils to participate in competitions and contests. He intends that they always have an artistic challenge and that they experience what it is to be a professional illustrator with real projects and clients. For all these reasons I recommend without reservation and with great pleasure Professor Abner Romero Rosario to receive from the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) the "Educator of Distinction" award, recognizing his value as an educator, professional quality, his work as a cultural ambassador and custodian of universal values."
¡Enhorabuena profesor Romero Rosario!
